Why The ES Space Exists

I am not a natural sports person.

I wasn't the sporty kid at school, and I've never been blessed with any particular athletic talent. If you've ever looked at someone and thought, "I wish exercise came naturally to me," then trust me, I've thought exactly the same thing.

But I do have one skill that has helped me achieve a level of fitness I'm really happy with.

Consistency.

Not motivation. Not talent. Not the perfect programme. Just turning up, over and over again.

Over the years I've learnt to love exercise, not because of how it makes me look, but because of how it makes me feel.

I've had a number of depressive episodes throughout my life and exercise has always been one of the things that helps bring me back out of my funk. It helps keep my head calm and quiet. It's where I go when life feels overwhelming, and being consistent with it helps keep me steady.

My reasons for exercising have changed over the years.

One of the biggest is my two daughters.

I grew up during the era of "heroin chic", where women were constantly told to be smaller, thinner and take up less space. I want something different for my girls.

I want them to see exercise as a normal part of life, not as punishment for what they've eaten or something they have to do to change how they look.

I want them to see movement as something that makes you stronger, healthier and more capable.

I try very hard not to talk about food, exercise or body image in a negative way around them. Instead, we talk about being strong.

One of my favourite goals is being able to carry both of them at the same time. They're currently seven and four, so every year I need to get a little bit stronger if I want to keep doing it.

The ES Space was created because I wanted to help take some of the fear and intimidation out of exercise.

It's a space for people who don't know where to start.

For people who think everyone else in the gym knows what they're doing.

For people who worry they'll look silly.

For people who have tried before and fallen off track.

For people who simply want to feel stronger, move better and improve their wellbeing.

Whether you're a complete beginner or a performance athlete, you're welcome here.
